Mostnica Gorge is an attractive river walk close to Lake Bohinj. In some parts of the gorge, the river has cut deeply into the rock, and the gorge is no more than 1m across. There are numerous cascades and waterfalls along the river, however the depth of the gorge and thick woodland can make it difficult to get a clean shot along some parts of the river. The walk follows both sides of the river – following the river up-stream on the right, then returning down-river on the left.
There is a small car-park for the gorge, about 0.5km west of the village of Star Fuzina, and from here the path crosses some fields past some barns before entering the woods to reach the pay-station. There is a charge for both the car-park and the gorge, but only a few Euros per person.

The walk through the gorge proper starts at the Devil’s Bridge. The bridge is not as fearsome as it sounds, but does arch high across the river, and was originally built for transporting iron ore across the river.
Beyond the bridge, the walk follows the river through the woodland, with streams occasionally running down from the hillside.
After a short distance a wider area of river is reached where the river cascades over the rocks. This is a good spot for some long exposure photography to capture the movement on the water.
Above the cascades, the gorge narrows and the path follows the top of the gorge, with occasional glimpses down into the gorge. There are various pot-holes carved by the river over the years.
At the top of the path, a bridge crosses to the opposite river bank, with views down into the gorge.
The river path on the opposite bank is probably less scenic than the upward part, but at one point a stream runs in with a series of attractive waterfalls.
Further down-stream, close to the large cascades photographed on the way up, the river opens up, providing a better view of some minor cascades that could not be seen on the outward journey.
We visited Mostnica Gorge on a very dull overcast day, but the river and woodland makes for a pleasant half-day walk, and is well worth visiting in any weather.
