About The Image
This image was taken on a skiing holiday in the Dolomites in early 2018. Skiing holidays do not usually yield high quality images, but in this case a bit of low cloud isolated the tree and the barn and made for a good atmospheric shot. It was taken on a Panasonic LX5 camera - a small compact camera with only 10MP, so had quite high noise levels. At first I thought that noise gave the image a gritty feel, and when I entered it into exhibitions it was doing OK, with about a 50% acceptance rate, Then a judge at our local club commented negatively on the noise, so I applied some noise reduction to clean it up. After that, its performance was transformed, with a 100% success rate in BPE exhibitions and numerous awards, including a gold medal for bet mono image. That level of performance continued in International competitions, resulting in this being my number one most successful competition image. Interesting that of all my competition images, this one was taken on the lowest spec camera.
