2026 – Slovenia

27th/28th January 2026

Day 1 – Sveti Sobota and Sveti Tomaz

We had an early morning flight from Manchester to Ljubljana, so it was still morning when we arrived. As we descended into Ljubljana we were in bright sunshine, but just before touchdown we dropped into thick fog. We had some lunch at the airport then picked up the hire car. We only had a short drive to our first stop at Skofia Loka, so we decided to drive on for a further 20 minutes to visit the small scenic church at Bukov Vrh, known as Sveta Sobota, or Church Of Our Lady Of Sorrows,k . We expected to get some foggy pictures, but as we climbed towards the church, we broke out of the fog into brilliant sunshine.

It was not possible to compose a shot of the church above the fog, but looking out from the church there were wonderful views north across the sea of fog.

Below us, there was a farm which gradually appeared out of the mist.

We waited for about an hour, watching as the farm moved in and out of the fog. Eventually the fog pulled back, and we were rewarded with a spectacular view of the farm rising like an island out of the fog, with the Kamnik Savinja Alps in the background.

Above The Clouds

We were hoping to get some pictures of the Slovenia churches in the snow, so a bit of editing in Photoshop has turned this image a bit more wintery!
