Lake Bohinj
Lake Bohinj is the ‘big brother’ to Lake Bled, but is less well known as it lacks some of the scenic appeal of the smaller lake. Nevertheless there is a good view along the length of the lake, and the church at Bohinj is nicely placed next to an arched bridge which looks particularly attractive at night.
Lake Bohinj is about 4 km long and just under 1km across. The only community on the lake is the small town of Ribčev Laz, which is located at the eastern end of the lake. Boat trips depart from the town, and from the jetty there is a view along the length of the lake. We visited Mostnica Gorge on Saturday 19th October, then stopped off at Lake Bohinj on the way back, taking some pictures of the lake and church. There were thick clouds, low over the lake, but the water was very still, giving some atmospheric shots.
The Church at Lake Bohinj is dedicated to St John the Baptist and the oldest part dates from the mid 16th Century. It is located next to the arched bridge over the River Savica, and the classic view of the church and bridge is from the jetty for the boat trips.
It is also possible to photography the church and bridge from the opposite side of the Savica River, however the composition is not as good as from the jetty.
We returned to Lake Bohinj towards the end of our holiday on the evening of Wednesday 23rd October to photograph the church, which is illuminated at night. First we took a few shots along the length of the lake, which was once again shrouded in cloud.
As we were waiting for darkness, it started to rain, so we took some shelter under the ticket office at the jetty. We were just about to set up at the end of the jetty to photograph the church when a large group of German photographers turned up, walked past us and took up all the space on the jetty. So our night photographs of the church are from the ticket office, which does not quite give the best composition compared to being further out on the jetty. By compensation however, the tour guide did some light painting on the bridge for his group, so we managed to take advantage of that.
