Our last day at Abisko was a free day, so together with some other guests staying at the hotel we took a leisurely stroll through some woods and out onto the frozen Lake Tornetrask. First we visited the Abiskojokk Canyon – this is a canyon formed where the River Abisko flows into Lake Tornetrask. There are waterfalls in the canyon, which in winter freeze over to form spectacular icicles.
While we were there, we say a party of climbers descending into the gorge to go ice climbing. From the way they descended the slope, I had the impression that the lead climber was rather more experienced, and the others were probably novice climbers.
On the way back, we saw the leader in action, half way up a frozen waterfall.
Beyond the gorge, we followed a path through the forest, with views back towards Lake Nuolja and the ski resort above Abisko.
Further on, we cam out onto the ice of Lake Tornetrask
From the lake, there are views towards the Lapporten Valley – an impressive U shaped valley through the mountains.
We also took the time to pose for some pictures, along with the other members of our tourist group.
That evening after dinner, part of our holiday itinerary was to take the chairlift to the top of the Abisko ski slopes to visit the mountain restaurant, with the hope of viewing the aurora from the top of the mountain. Unfortunately the night was cloudy, so there was nothing to see, but it was a little strange taking the chair lift at night in the bitter cold, and it afforded a final opportunity for a night shot looking over Abisko.
