2026 – Faroe Islands

Day 10 – Gjov to Torshavn

Today it was time to leave Gjov and return to Torshavn.  The first part of the drive was back over the Eiddiskard pass and we hoped for some more wildlife pictures, but only managed a picture of a sheep.

Once over the pass, we decided to stop at Funningur, which we had bypassed on the way to Gjov because the weather had not been promising. Funningur has a small turf roofed church which is located in a picturesque location next to a river flowing into the sea. The church is amongst the older wooden churches in the Faroe Islands, dating from 1847.

The drive back to Torshavn takes less than an hour, so to pass the rest of the day we decided to cross over to the west side of Streymoy. We had visited this area on Day 2 for the trip to Koltur, and after the trip had driven to the southern end of Streymoy. So today, we decided to drive north along the west coast. The only village is a few scattered houses at Velbastadur, and from the height of the village we had a fine view across the Hestfjordur, with a small sailing boat giving a great sense of scale.

A turf covered building in Velbastadur offered some foreground interest for a view towards the island of Koltur.

The narrow road continues up the west side of Eysturoy, ending at a farm at Sydradalur. There was a very attractive waterfall, so we stopped for some pictures, and suddenly found ourselves very popular with the local sheep population – presumably expecting to get fed.

The reason for stopping wad to photograph an attractive waterfall on the Sydradalsur River, which cascaded down towards the farm below in a series of cascades. A side shot captures it tumbling below a mountain peak.

This is a more intimate view looking back up the waterfall.

After visiting the waterfall, we returned to Torshavn for our last night’s stay of the holiday.
