Day 8 – Klaksvik To Gjov
Today we left Klaksvik and transferred to the quiet village of Gjov at the northern end of Eysturoy. The morning started bright and clear, so we started by driving up towards the hiking area of Klakkur, which gives views over Klaksvik and the surrounding mountains.
As the day was clear, I was keen to do some more walking, so we took the tunnel to Eysturoy and stopped at Leirvik, where there is a path up to a mountain pass. The walk started from the football pitch, and we had previously noted that the Faroese seem very keen on their football.
At the start if the walk there was a small turf covered hut, which had an unusual wall constructed from very large stones. It was not obvious what its purpose was.
As we climbed towards the pass, the weather became more cloudy, but there were good views over Leirvik, backed by the mountains of Kalsoy.
Towards the top, the path steepened and became a bit of a scramble to reach the top of the ridge. Carol decided to stop, but I was keen to reach the top for the views along the narrow ridge towards the Leirviksfjall Mountain.
Back in Lerivik, we had lunch at the harbour, which had some attractive painted lodges on the waterfront.
Instead of heading straight to Gjov from Leirvik, we too a detour along the east coast of Eysturoy to th enext town of Fuglafjordur. This felt like quite an industrialised town, but there were some interesting sculptures adjacent to a marina, depicting a local version of a merman.
On the beach, there was the wreck of an old ship called the Kyrjasteinur. This was one of the last fishing schooners to operate out of Fuglafjordur, and there were plans to turn it into a museum. However it sank before those plans could be followed through, and although salvaged, it is currently left decaying on the beach.
From Fuglafjordur we made another detour to visit Oyndarfjordur. This was a small village, so we did not stay long, but close by was quite an attractive waterfall, where we stopped for some pictures.
After visiting Oyndarfjordur, we drove on to our final destination today, the small village of Gjov at the far northern tip of Eysturoy, where we would spend the next couple of nights.
